Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy injures shoulder in Chiefs-Chargers

After a collision with Travis Kelce, Worthy left the game
Kansas City’s season opener in Brazil ended with more than just a loss on the scoreboard. Star receiver Xavier Worthy was forced out of action in the second quarter of the Chiefs’ 27-21 defeat to the Chargers after suffering a shoulder injury. The team expects to know more once he undergoes further testing back home.
The injury came on Kansas City’s third offensive play. Worthy collided with tight end Travis Kelce while running a route, landing hard and immediately clutching his right arm. After receiving attention on the sideline, the second-year receiver was escorted to the locker room, visibly frustrated, and did not return.
Already short-handed at wide receiver with Rashee Rice suspended for six games and rookie Jalen Royals sidelined, the Chiefs’ depth was tested immediately. Worthy had been featured in the first three snaps, taking a carry for no gain and drawing a target on the play that led to his exit.
The 22-year-old entered the season as one of Kansas City’s most important offensive weapons. As a rookie in 2024, he ranked second on the team in receptions with 59, led all Chiefs wideouts with 638 receiving yards, and finished first among all pass catchers on the roster with six touchdowns.
Without him, Patrick Mahomes will likely lean more heavily on veterans Marquise Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster, with Tyquan Thornton also expected to see additional opportunities in the passing game.
