Derek Carr says an NFL comeback is possible, but only in the right situation.

During a recent episode of Home Grown with David & Derek Carr, the 34-year-old quarterback said he would consider unretiring in 2026, but not just for any team. Carr said two things would have to be true: he must be fully healthy, and the roster must give him a legitimate chance to compete for a Super Bowl.

His comments came after NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Mike Garafolo, and Tom Pelissero reported on Sunday, February 13, 2026, that Carr could return if the coaching staff and overall fit made sense.

Carr stepped away from football last spring after suffering a labral tear in his rotator cuff while with New Orleans. Surgery was an option, but it likely would have jeopardized his ability to play last season, leading to a retirement agreement with the Saints.

Now, the biggest question is team fit. Carr also said he turned down multiple opportunities during the season. NFL Network reported that Cincinnati was one of the clubs that reached out after Joe Burrow’s turf toe injury.

If Carr does decide to return, any move would still involve New Orleans, which retains his contract rights. That means interested teams would need to work out compensation with the Saints before a deal could happen.
