From undrafted long shot to one of the league’s most reliable wide receivers, Adam Thielen has officially called it a career.

Thielen announced his retirement Wednesday, closing the book on a 13-season NFL journey that spanned multiple teams and eras. His final campaign ended with a Wild Card loss, bringing an end to one of the league’s most unlikely success stories.

The signs had been building for months. Thielen acknowledged last offseason that he was nearing the end of his playing days, and a late-career return to Minnesota ahead of the 2025 season felt symbolic. Still, his path would take one final turn before the finish line.

#From Undrafted to Minnesota Mainstay

Thielen entered the league in 2013 as an undrafted free agent with the Minnesota Vikings, spending his first season on the practice squad and fighting for opportunities behind an established depth chart. That opportunity arrived in 2016, when injuries opened the door and Thielen proved he belonged.

He quickly developed into one of the NFL’s most dependable route runners and contested-catch specialists. His breakout came in 2017, when he topped 1,200 receiving yards during a 13-win season that carried Minnesota to the NFC Championship Game. A year later, he followed it up with a career-best campaign, cementing his place among the league’s elite receivers.

Even as injuries briefly slowed him in 2019, Thielen rebounded as a consistent red-zone threat and technician, posting double-digit touchdown seasons in the early 2020s. When Minnesota drafted a young star receiver, Thielen became both a productive counterpart and a steadying veteran presence.

For several seasons, the duo formed one of the league’s most reliable receiving tandems. But salary-cap realities eventually forced Minnesota to move on, marking the end of Thielen’s first chapter with the franchise that defined his rise.
