Will the 49ers Trade Mac Jones? John Lynch Sets a High Bar

49ers GM John Lynch says San Francisco values Mac Jones and would only move him for a strong return.
San Francisco general manager John Lynch made it clear Tuesday that Mac Jones is not available at a discount. Lynch said the 49ers view Jones as important depth and would only explore a deal if another team brings a serious offer.
That stance comes with logic on both sides. Jones has one season left on his contract, and moving him now could let San Francisco cash in before he reaches free agency next offseason. But the 49ers also saw firsthand how valuable a capable backup can be when Brock Purdy missed time.
In Jones’ eight starts last season, he went 5-3 while completing 69.6% of his passes for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns, and six interceptions. Those numbers likely improved his value around the league after an uneven run in New England.
The quarterback market could also work in San Francisco’s favor. Outside of projected No. 1 pick Fernando Mendoza, this draft is viewed as thin at the top, which may push QB-needy teams toward veteran trade options.
For now, the message from Lynch is straightforward: the 49ers like having Jones in the building, and they will only move him if the return is strong enough to outweigh the security he gives their offense.
