#Contract impact

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Cook and the Bills have agreed to a four-year, $48 million contract extension, with $30 million guaranteed. That’s a lofty number for the position, especially considering only Christian McCaffrey, Saquon Barkley, and Derrick Henry currently average at least $15 million per year.

Barkley’s huge 2024 campaign sparked speculation about whether it might push the market upward for running backs, a position many believe has been undervalued in recent years. Cook had the chance to benefit from that momentum.

The 25-year-old topped 1,000 rushing yards for the second straight year and scored an NFL-best 16 touchdowns, tying the Buffalo franchise record set by O.J. Simpson in 1975.

#Why Buffalo made the move

The extension gives Buffalo stability around Josh Allen and rewards a back who has become more than a change-of-pace piece. Cook’s burst, touchdown production, and receiving ability give the Bills a way to stay balanced without taking the ball out of Allen’s hands in high-leverage moments.

It also signals how the Bills view their offensive identity. Paying a running back at this level only makes sense if the team believes he can help protect leads, punish lighter boxes, and keep the offense from becoming too dependent on Allen creating every explosive play.
